Blood Glucose Meter for Pets

Universal Biosensors

PETRACKR®

Background

Pets are living longer than ever, and just like humans, an ageing population brings health problems, such as diabetes. In response to this, Universal Biosensors sought to transfer leading human diabetes technology to develop the first of its kind blood glucose meter for pets.

Recognising our background in diabetes-related diagnostic products and expertise in user interface (UI) design, we were approached to support the development of a device that could effectively serve the needs of veterinary professionals and pet owners.

The blood glucose meter offers a versatile and user-friendly solution. PETRACKR®’s intuitive UI design, coupled with context-enriched test results, makes it a valuable tool in pet health management.

Value Delivered

  • Transfer of leading human blood glucose technology for the use of pets.
  • Intuitive UI developed to serve the needs of multiple users.
  • Seamless translation of the UI into a functional product.
  • Appealing and coherent visual design.
  • Improved usability through visual language and icons.

“The expertise from Shore has enabled us to deliver an exceptional device with an intuitive design that caters for diverse user needs that has been positively received in the pet market”

Accommodating various users

The main challenge was to accommodate different user groups, primarily veterinarians and pet owners. We designed it so veterinarians can switch between multiple pet profiles efficiently, as their daily operations involve monitoring various animals. On the other hand, pet owners typically manage a single pet’s health, necessitating a simpler, more streamlined experience.

Appealing and coherent design

We created an appealing and coherent visual design to bring the features to life. The UI needed to align with the physical design aesthetics of the device and be intuitive for users of varying technical abilities. This involved developing pet and task-specific icons and a system that allowed easy identification and management of pet profiles. This visual language not only complemented the device’s physical design but also improved overall usability.

Seamless translation of the UI design

To ensure seamless translation of the UI design into a functional product, we produced a comprehensive UI design specification. The UI specification serves as a critical guide for the software development team, detailing every single aspect of the UI, from layout and colour schemes to iconography and interaction flows.

This specification was instrumental in bridging the gap between the UI design and software development teams, ensuring that the final product accurately represented the envisioned user experience while also being technically feasible.

Adapting human diabetes management for pets

Our collaboration on this project is not the first time we’ve worked in diabetes management. However, where we normally work with humans as patients, this system has been calibrated for dogs and cats.

We’ve been involved in the development of a vast portfolio of diabetes-related products and services which are used by millions of consumers daily, in over 65 countries.

Our team has worked on every phase of development, from early concept and feasibility studies to industrial design, user experience (UX) design, engineering development, through to new product integration.

“Designing the UI for a blood glucose meter tailored to pets required a delicate balance between the needs of veterinary professionals and pet owners. It was essential to create an easy to navigate, seamless experience that supports multiple users to focus on providing care. Being a dog owner myself, it’s great to see Universal Biosensors leading the way in the pet healthcare market and investing in user experience”
