Red dot design award win for RENASYS EDGE
Published: 11 October 2024
RENASYS EDGE has been awarded the prestigious ‘Best of the Best’ in the Medical Device and Technology category of the Red Dot Design Awards.
Congratulations to the team at Smith+Nephew for their well-deserved recognition of an outstanding medical design.
We at Shore are extremely proud of our contribution to this award-winning design and honoured to be acknowledged as part of the collaborative design team.
RENASYS EDGE is a next-generation Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) system that applies sub-atmospheric pressure to aid wound healing while prioritising patient discretion, simplifying turnaround between patients, and reducing maintenance overhead.
The collaboration between Smith+Nephew and Shore is based on a shared passion and understanding for user-centred design. Working closely with the Smith+Nephew team, we navigated diverse requirements to cater to the needs of users, Healthcare Professionals (HCPs), and patients.
Drawing upon expertise in industrial design, user interface (UI) design, usability, systems engineering, device architecture, and mechanical engineering, we integrated these disciplines to create a range of concepts.
The device’s industrial design focuses on portability and user comfort. Its compact form factor allows for easy transport, enabling patients to maintain their normal daily routines without disruption. Additionally, the device has been engineered to be quiet, facilitating a peaceful environment for patients during sleep or rest. The result is a product that seamlessly integrates into patients’ lives, promoting a sense of normality and comfort.
A unique element of the project was creating an intuitive UI with contextual tutorials through the form of animations simplifying the alarm resolution process and reducing alarm fatigue. This design approach eliminates the need for extensive user training and reliance on manuals. It also supports patient therapy progress and adherence, empowering users to actively participate in their treatment.
James McLusky, Director at Shore and Design Lead, adds: “It was a pleasure to work with the team at Smith+Nephew and we’re pleased to deliver on an advanced ‘award-winning’ device that prioritises user-friendly design. With a focus on safety, versatility, and intuitive features, the RENASYS EDGE is poised to disrupt NPWT and elevate the standard of care for patients and HCPs”.
Congratulations to the Shore team members involved; James McLusky, Grant Howarth, James Glencross, Will Davies, Adam James, and Jimmy Mower.
