Will's thoughts: PDA Universe of Pre-filled Syringes and Injection Devices conference

It’s been just over a week since I returned from Phoenix, Arizona, where I was delighted to be part of the Shore team for the PDA Universe of Pre-filled Syringes and Injection Devices conference. It was a fantastic experience, but it wasn’t without a few unexpected hiccups.
On the first day, our display cabinet remained distressingly empty, as our suitcase of example products had got lost in transit! Then, on the second day, all poster presentations were cancelled, including my scheduled slot to present on Sustainable Design for Healthcare Devices.
Sustainability poster
Hiccups aside, I enjoyed sharing our poster’s key points with attendees who stopped by to chat and learn more – there is clearly a growing interest in sustainability within the industry. It was very rewarding to see that Alessandro Morandotti and Jakob Lange specifically acknowledged the poster for innovation in their selected highlights email as the event drew to a close (PDA day 2 take-away email).
Our poster works through sustainable pathways towards complete circularity in the medical device industry. Detailing the lifecycle phases of a product, I highlight opportunities and design approaches for sustainability improvement at every stage.
Since I didn’t get the chance to present live at the event, here’s a run-through of it:
Drug delivery trends
The follow-up email from PDA mentioned some trending topics at the event, including viscosity, volume, and modelling — timely, given Shore’s recent feature in ONdrugDelivery’s Pre-Filled Syringe edition.
In this article, Shore’s Kyle Toole, Blair Hutton, and James McLusky discuss how mathematical modelling and empirical testing enhance the development of devices for subcutaneous delivery of high-viscosity, large-volume biologics.
Reconnecting with colleagues and friends
It was a pleasure spending time at the conference with colleagues Holly Milston and Ian Scrimgeour, and I was delighted to catch up with Peter Krulevitch. Peter has been a highly-valued collaborator with Shore over the years, and it was fantastic to hear updates about the exciting developments at Biolark.
If you would like to chat about anything I’ve mentioned above, or the work we do at Shore, then please drop us a message.
